Preface

You have a much better chance of becoming a millionaire by starting your own business than you do of winning the lottery. In 1988, Time magazine estimated that the U.S. could boast two million millionaires. and that 90% of them had earned their fortunes by starting their own firms. The 1990 census showed there were 248,709,873 people in this country. Thus, one out of every 150 or so persons in the country has become a millionaire by starting his own business.

Unfortunately, unlike winning the lottery, luck has nothing to do with creating a successful business.  A successful business requires a great deal of thought, planning, self-denial and hard work.

This booklet is certainly not going to make you rich. That is something you will have to do for yourself. What it will do is show you a wide range of financial tools and explain how they are supposed to be used. After that, it is up to you to select the tools you need to build your business.

In writing this booklet, I have relied largely on the comments of thousands of small business owners rather than on the opinions of experts. That is because, when it comes to small business, the only experts are the people who have succeeded.

I must apologize to the reader because there is nothing revolutionary, or particularly new, in this book. That is because there is nothing startling about becoming wealthy by starting a business. It has been done by at least 1.8 million people in this country in your and my lifetime. It is not easy but it can be done.
